Dedication and cooperation were instrumental in enabling SMK St Columba here to emerge overall winner in the state-level English Drama competition held at Pustaka Miri on Wednesday.

The school’s drama entitled ‘Burnt to Ashes’ also won The Best Script Award. The drama was about a brilliant scientist and doctor, Dr Ash Burnsalot, who lost the only woman he had ever loved and how he coped with life after that.

With the victory, SMK St Columba will represent Sarawak in the national-level competition scheduled to be held in August this year.

The second place went to the drama entitled ‘Bibi’, performed by students of SMK Kapit. They also took home The Best Performer Award.

The third, fourth and fifth placing respectively were ‘When Blood is Shed’ (SMK Samarahan), ‘Wise Daughter’ (SMK St Mary Kuching) and ‘Generation-Y (SMK Spaoh Betong).

The Most Promising Actor title went to Lemba (Wise Daughter).

Winners of the competition received their prizes in the form of trophies and medals from Miri District deputy education officer Alias Ngah, who represented the state Education director Abdillah Adam.

The presentation of the prizes was held simultaneously with the closing of the state-level Language Carnival centred here.

A total of nine schools took part in the competition which was organised by SMK St Columba, which emerged first runner-up in a similar competition last year.

The annual competition aimed to support national efforts to encourage the use of English language among students and to give them the opportunity to get together and develop their drama skills.

It was also to encourage students to appreciate drama, as it promotes integration and inculcates fine moral values.

Among those present were the Education Department’s assistant director (Co-curriculum Sector) Ngelambong Anggik and Head of Human Resource (Education Department, Miri) Noor Elia Elias, principals and headmasters of the participating schools, including Mohd Shariff Mat Saat – principal of SMK Baru and organising chairman for the closing ceremony, and Robinette Tiong – principal of SMK St Columba and organising chairperson for the drama competition.
