CEREMONIAL WELCOME: The Head of State inspects the guard-of-honour mounted for his 91st birthday celebration parade at Miri Stadium.
MIRI: It was a riot of colour and a united Sarawak at the 91st birthday parade of the Head of state Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin at Miri Stadium yesterday.

It was attended by state cabinet ministers and people from political parties, civil service, private sector and NGOs.

With 91 contingents taking part in the parade, the colourful costumes and atmosphere of celebration were a sight to behold for those who had turned up at the stadium since early morning.

State cabinet ministers led by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib were on hand to receive the Head of State and spouse Toh Puan Norkiah upon their arrival at the venue at 8am.

It kicked off with a royal salute by the Armed Forces followed by the state anthem and the inspection of the guard-of-honour by the head of state, and later inspection of contingents with the chief minister by his side.

It was followed by a ‘doa’ and address by the chief minister who attributed the many changes and progress enjoyed by the state to the head of state’s leadership as reflected in the speeches in the state legislative assembly.

The shouts of “Dirgahayu!” reverberated across the stadium prior to the march past of the contingents and performances on the field which included ‘Tarian Rentak Kenyalang’ and 1Malaysia song ‘I am for you’.

Other songs, including Chinese and Indian favourites, were also played to show racial unity and harmony among Malaysians.

The celebration continued with the head of state accompanied by his wife, chief minister and wife Ragad and other ministers, cutting the cake for his 91st birthday.

Meanwhile, this year’s best uniformed contingent for the Public Services Department (PSD) category went to Land and Survey Department, while Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) came second and Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA), third.

As for the most creative contingent category, the Iban community leaders dressed in traditional Iban costumes came first.
